The Importance of an Eye Examination

 

Eye Examinations are not just about whether you need to wear glasses or contact lenses. Regular comprehensive eye examinations are essential for the early detection and treatment of most eye diseases. Your routine comprehensive eye examination involves:

 

-History taking

 

This includes a thorough review of any current complaints, visual observations, reviewing previous ocular history, relevant family ocular history and general health.

 

-Vision and prescription check

 

Clarity of vision and checking of current prescriptions determine if any optical corrections are needed for either distant sight, reading fine print, or both. The optometrist may also check your eye muscle movements and coordination to assess binocular visual function.

 

-External & internal ocular health examination

 

Health of external eye structures such as the eyelids, sclera, conjunctiva, cornea, iris and lens will be examined.

Internal examination involves an inspection of optic nerve, retina and structures at the back of the eye, including the macula. Eye Pressure will also be measured as a routine screening test for glaucoma.

 

-Review and management plan

 

The optometrist will then discuss their findings and develop a management plan with you. This may include the type of optical corrections you need, prescription of therapeutic medication or referral to an ophthalmologist if necessary.

 

How regularly should I get my eyes checked?

 

At Eye Focus Optometrist we recommend you get an eye check at least once every two years. This may become more frequent if you are found to have fluctuating vision or a condition that may need to checked more regularly. If this is the case our Optometrist will recommend a suitable time.
